Tim Wellens and Thymen Arensman win Tour de France stages! Both shone at the Tour de Pologne
Riders well known from the roads of the Tour de Pologne once again proved their worth by winning stages at the Tour de France. Over the weekend, victories went to Tim Wellens of UAE Team Emirates-XRG and Thymen Arensman of INEOS Grenadiers. The Belgian has previously won the general classification at the Tour de Pologne, while the Dutchman from INEOS Grenadiers finished second in the Polish race.
The Tour de France – the world’s most important cycling race and the last stage event of the UCI WorldTour before the Tour de Pologne – has been underway for two weeks. Riders who have previously succeeded on Polish roads are performing well in this year’s edition of the “La Grande Boucle”.
Seven former Tour de Pologne winners started this year’s Tour de France, and in the first part of the race, stage victories were claimed by the likes of Tim Merlier, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) and Simon Yates (Team Visma | Lease a Bike). Each of them also celebrated victories in past editions of the Tour de Pologne.
The weekend saw more great performances from riders well known from the Tour de Pologne. Saturday’s stage was won by Thymen Arensman from INEOS Grenadiers. In 2022, the 25-year-old won a stage in the Polish race and finished 2nd in the ORLEN General Classification! On a demanding mountain stage, he outpaced two dominant riders – current race leader Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and last year’s Tour de Pologne winner, Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike).
On Sunday, a breakaway once again fought for victory, and a solo attack brought triumph to Tim Wellens. Usually serving as a domestique for Tadej Pogačar, Wellens is no stranger to winning – something he also showed at the Tour de Pologne. In 2016, after a bold solo move, he won the stage to Zakopane and claimed overall victory. Last year, he was the fastest in the individual time trial up Orlinek in Karpacz.
“Riders who have achieved success at the Tour de Pologne UCI WorldTour are once again playing key roles in the world’s biggest races. I’m very happy that every year we get to host major stars and rising talents. I’m sure the 82nd Tour de Pologne will bring great sporting emotions too!” – said Czesław Lang, General Director of the Tour de Pologne UCI WorldTour.
This year’s 82nd Tour de Pologne will once again return to both Karpacz and Zakopane, where stages 2 and 5 will finish respectively. The UCI WorldTour race will take place from August 4–10 and will be broadcast on TVP, Eurosport, and the MAX streaming platform, reaching fans in 65 countries!
