Rafał Majka Polish National Champion in the Road Race!

On Sunday, the road race at the Polish National Road Cycling Championships took place. The victory went to Rafał Majka of UAE Team Emirates, who thus claimed the Polish champion’s jersey for the second time in his career. Among the successes of one of Poland’s best cyclists is also a win in the general classification of the Tour de Pologne.

The end of June in the cycling calendar has always been associated with national championships. This is the official date set by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) when riders compete for medals and the prestigious national champion jerseys. Every rider who has ever participated in their national championship dreams of having one in their collection.

This year’s Polish Championships were held on a course in Dobczyce, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. The 200-kilometre race featured numerous climbs, the toughest of which was over 4 kilometers long, with gradients repeatedly reaching double digits. The route therefore favored climbers, including Rafał Majka of UAE Team Emirates, who returned to the Polish Championships after several years.

One of the greatest cyclists in Polish history attacked at the start of the second of three laps and quickly bridged to a five-man breakaway. He was later joined at the front by Mateusz Gajdulewicz, Paweł Bernas (Mazowsze Serce Polski), and Filip Maciejuk (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), who joined the leading group a bit later than Majka.

Paweł Bernas was the last rider to stay with the UAE Team Emirates leader, but on the day, no one could match Rafał Majka. Several dozen kilometers before the finish, he dropped the rest and soloed to victory. In Dobczyce, he claimed his second national champion’s jersey. His previous win in the road race came in 2016 in Świdnica. The other podium spots went to Paweł Bernas and Mateusz Gajdulewicz. The latter also made headlines earlier this year with a strong performance at the ORLEN Nations Grand Prix, where he finished sixth overall and took third place on a stage ending at Hotel Arłamów.

Today, Rafał Majka added another great achievement to his rich palmarès. Among his biggest accomplishments is victory in the general classification of the 2014 Tour de Pologne, where he won two stages. He also claimed a stage win two years ago in Duszniki-Zdrój, out-sprinting Matej Mohorič and Michał Kwiatkowski — another outstanding Polish rider.

Who knows — perhaps this year Rafał Majka will show off the white-and-red jersey with the eagle emblem during the 82nd Tour de Pologne? The race will take place from August 4 to 10.
